In Georgia, whitening is dentistry

Georgia's Board of Dentistry counts anything used for "changing the shape and shade of teeth" as a dental appliance. Making or fitting one is the practice of dentistry.

The board has written that changing the shade of teeth, "such as is done by the current whitening techniques," is the practice of dentistry. A whitening business without a dentist risks a felony charge.

In 2017 a federal court in Atlanta upheld Georgia's rule against a whitening business whose clients often put the gel on themselves. Self application did not change the answer.

So do not run in-chair whitening in a Georgia salon on its own. A dental practice can run this system. A med spa can run it with a Georgia dentist on site.
