The rule in Illinois

Illinois says yes, the way we do it

The Illinois Dental Practice Act names salon whitening. A person who is not a dentist does not practice dentistry when they tell the client they are not a licensed dentist and give the client "appropriate equipment on-site to the consumer for the consumer to self-apply teeth whitening materials."

The same law draws a hard line. Placing your hands in a client's mouth to apply the gel, or to help apply it, is the practice of dentistry.

That is exactly how a Brite Lounge session runs. Your client applies the gel herself. You guide, time the rounds and run the light. You never put the gel on, and your hands never go in her mouth to help.

Do one more thing every time: tell the client, in writing on the consent form, that you are not a licensed dentist.
